Well folks, we’re baaaaaaack! Like it or lump it, September is here — so first things first: Welcome!
Summer seemed to fly by for a lot of us. Whether you’re feeling ready to get back into a routine (or def NOT feeling that), or wondering where the heck the last two months went, join us on Sept 18th for a coffee, doughnut, and connect with other Hawkwood parents and caregivers.
Back-to-School: Coffee & Connections (and doughnuts!) on Friday, September 18, from 8:30 AM - 9:10 AM.
This is a free, casual event intended simply to bring our school community together as the new year gets underway. If you’d like to help us cover the cost, a loonie or two would be very much appreciated — but there’s absolutely no obligation. Our main goal is to gather, mingle and start the year off on a warm and welcoming note.
The Hawkwood School Council and Friends of Hawkwood School Society are also getting back into the swing of things!
Our first meeting is Tuesday, September 8th at 6:30 PM, and everyone is welcome. Join us in person in the school library or online via Microsoft Teams. An invite will be sent out the day of the meeting.
And yes — we would LOVE to have more people join us this year!
You don’t need to know everything about School Council. You don’t need to have a ton of free time. And you definitely don’t need to be an expert at running meetings, organizing events or deciphering school acronyms. 😉
We want moms, dads, & guardians at the table. Different perspectives make for better conversations, better ideas and a stronger school community.
And Dads — this is your invitation!
We’d especially love to see more fathers and male caregivers involved in Council. Not because we want fewer moms — we absolutely don’t! — but because your perspective matters too. When more voices and experiences are represented around the table, we make better decisions for our kids and our school.
So if you’ve ever thought, “I wonder what actually happens at School Council?” — come find out! You can join us for a meeting, see what we’re all about and decide from there. No lifetime commitment required.
Volunteer forms and clearances on CBE parent portal
Uggggghhhh. It's time to fill out student forms on your CBE portal. Forms are the worst, you just gotta do em' and get it over with. AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fill out the volunteer form. Here’s an important bit of information for anyone who might be interested in helping at the school this year: signing a volunteer form does not mean you have to volunteer.
It simply means that if an opportunity comes up that works for you, you’re able to take part. You can sign the form now and decide later whether a particular event, activity or request fits your schedule. The required volunteer clearance is also covered by the CBE, so there is no cost to you.
Did you know that only about 2% of Hawkwood parents and caregivers currently volunteer? That’s a very small group carrying a lot of the work. Signing the form doesn’t commit you to anything, but it does help make sure those volunteers don’t burn out. Even occasional help can make a big difference! *School events will only go ahead this year if enough volunteers are signed up.
Stay in the loop
Each year, the school emails out a form where families can check off whether they would like to receive school emails. If you want to know what's happening at Hawkwood School, you should click YES. We hear from many parents and caregivers that they aren’t receiving updates about what’s happening at the school, and this may be why. It’s a small step that helps keep you in the loop!
